Roman Britain was home to a number of “Mystery Cults”. The Mystery Cults were rites that sought the perfection of the individual through ritual and initiation. These included the rites of Orpheus, Dionysius, and Isis as well as those of Mithras and even early Christianity. In this talk we will explore these religions with a special emphasis on psychogeography of local sites.

Saturday 2nd March 2019 - Leyline Hunting with Pat Toms from the Society of Leyhunters at Durham Cathedral 10:30 - 12:30 then after lunch a talk from 2 - 4 pm
Title: Sense of Place - a walk around Durham Cathedral and a talk, with Pat Toms.Sacred sites are chosen to enhance ritual activity and raise peoples' spirits. On a walk consider some features of Durham Cathedral, and feel what is special about its layout. Consider how subtle influences manifest through intuitive association with the form of things, experience them with respect to geology, topography and the building. Consider how features, in particular the altar, are located in relation to them and how heavenly and earthly influences are brought together to facilitate ritual. Participants are expected to want to try some subtle exercises; bring a dowsing L-rod or borrow one on the day. Outdoor warm clothing for all weather and sturdy footwear is required.
After lunch, hear a talk 'Bringing Heaven and Earth Together - Places for Being Spiritual' about how some aspects of ancient and traditional layout of built form appear to have been chosen with regard to sensual experience of the surroundings.
Pat Toms has worked in construction and now researches subtle experience of fields of form that arise on intuitive association with form and how they manifest and can be represented geometrically.
